Top 40 03:31
Honestly now Where’d you think this was gonna go? It’s clear to me now It was never meant to be It’s always me in my careful ways We heard your record did well in Germany And what worked there must surely work here Let’s see if it melts in the California heat Like a candy in a wrapper Or an apple out of reach
2.
John Stamos 03:48
When I’m a little out of it Seemingly out of reach Baby, don’t you know I’m just weak in the knees I want you, I need you Like John Stamos needs the Beach Boys When I’m a little full of it Trying to find my place in a world Where everything’s been done before Sounds and looks like shit I still want to, I need to be a part of it I just fall behind sometimes
3.
Roadworn 03:12
Middle-aged, buying road-worn guitars Gotta have that old-time feel As if I’ve been there myself But now I’m thinking of selling it Businessmen signing young bands Gotta have that youthful feel Just like I remember it They’re thinking of throwing it all away Remember me? I know it’s been a while Had my record in the New York Times Said it sounded European And all you had to do was play by the rules
4.
Soft Dads 03:03
Tough dads make tough sons Soft dads will make you fall apart When shit gets real, I’ll be the first to fall Remember when the 80s still felt like the 70s? Must have seen it on TV in an afternoon rerun
5.
I used to call you up on the landline phone Holding the receiver, waiting for the dial tone And somehow you always knew when it was me On the other end The car door used to stick in the early summer When all the streets were full of cars We had to park a bit further In the alley that was lined with linden trees In bloom And now I’m going places you’ve never seen You kept your love sedated Now it’s bursting at the seams On a map you just fold a page and pin a hole The future way of travel, so I’m told I know it must look far from your little corner Of the world And now I’m going places you’ve never seen You kept your love sedated Now it’s bursting at the seams

Phase 05:10
I was going through a phase Lost myself in a haze Someone better put me in my place We were on the airline All I could think of at the time was Do these chairs recline? Our egos will wash away Our accents will wash away Don’t you know Nobody’s safe in a storm I got a name drop In a four-star review You’re gonna get yours yet Our egos will wash away Our accents will wash away
8.
It’s just an old Evernote Sitting there, waiting to be heard It’s impossible, I know To recapture a feeling Let’s break up the band I keep breaking up the band A half-finished record being shelved Sitting there, waiting to be heard It’s impossible, I know Like trying to remember a dream Let’s break up the band I keep breaking up the band
9.
Blue Rinse 02:36
There goes another one Don’t know how it’s been so long That I’ve seen the seasons change From brown to green And blue again The flickering of TV in a sports bar The hair colouring of snowbirds Staying overnight on their way to Florida
10.
Credits 04:50
You and I always stay for the credits Even when the lights come back on Isn’t that the guy, I think he’s an extra In a film with Rick Moranis that I can’t recall Let me get back to you when it comes to me Or we can check IMDb when we get home You and I don’t care too much about money They’re just people with money, parents’ money Who needs a house at the waterfront? If you squint, you can see the lake from right here Now, baby, let’s turn off our phones ‘Cause there are things that we can do When we’re at home

about

Initially sparked by a disappointing experience in Los Angeles, EUROPOP is Carl Schilde’s first solo album. Feeling out of place and out of time in the music world, he started to embrace his own limitations, subverting themes like “making it” and pre- internet nostalgia with a Jim O’Rourke- inspired wink in his eye. While holed up in his Toronto basement, a lifelong obsession with outdated pop trickery and yesteryear’s preset sounds launched him into an alternate sonic universe—one where The Beach Boys’ late- 70s albums were big hits, and long-forgotten Italian soft rock is the style du jour.
The resulting ten songs were given their final sheen by mastering impresario Dave Cooley (Tame Impala, Blood Orange, J Dilla).

Born and raised in West Berlin sometime in the 80s, Carl has already had several musical incarnations.
From a Berlin Art Prize nomination for his single-note vinyl record (“The whole concept makes me upset” — VICE), to glimpsing the album charts by co- writing an aging crooner’s magnum opus (“Glamorous” — NY Times), he has always been more interested in exploring different angles than building a career. Since a transcontinental move to Canada, his focus has shifted from the conceptual to the immediate music-making process, with all its imperfections. An avid live performer, Carl is also a member of Playdate, whose album “Manitoulin Tapes” (“a blissed out lo-fi ambient gem” — The Wire) was recently released on Séance Centre.

Following the self-released single TOP 40, which has reached over 130k streams on Spotify, EUROPOP is scheduled to be released on February, 4th, 2022 on Staatsakt’s new interplanetary imprint, Fun In The Church.
