about

Consider this experimental arrangement: The Filipino musician, film maker and poet Khavn and the German intellectual, philosopher and film maker Alexander Kluge are working on a filmic reflection on the ancient Myth of Orpheus. Albeit with an interesting twist: In their film, Orpheus becomes the female Orphea.

Orphea is played by Lilith Stangenberg, an upcoming and highly awarded German actress. Their collectively achieved, collage-like film is a wild genre mix of Kluge-typical talking heads, psychedelic montages (Khavn) and Lilith Stangenberg’s impressive singing and acting throughout all imagery. The film celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2020 in the newly established section „Encounters“.

Furthermore, Orphea is the name of an actual band that evolved from the movie: Khavn plays the organ, Lilith sings and Brezel Göring (of French-German Garage Rock-duo Stereo Total and as long time underground hero and Khavn collaborator) is adding guitars, rhythms and noises of all sorts. Orphea sounds like Blondie from hell.

"Knock knock, can you hear me?!", Orphea/Lilith is asking on their lead single "Leper" over and over again. What remains completely unclear, though is whether she is addressing the figures that populate the mythological Greek Underworld or if she has already entered the Underworld and is therefore addressing us, the ones remaining on the outside. And if we can actually hear her voice, what does it mean for us...?

"Lovesongs From Hell" is the intriguing title of Orphea's album, which will be released on October 16th in cooperation with Rapid Eye Movies at Fun in the church, the outernational sublabel imprint of infamous Berlin based label Staatsakt. The film will be in cinemas from October 15th...
